Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, a lot of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
